THE WEDDING
Origins: From Monastery to Villa
The story of Villa Erba begins long before its present-day grandeur. Around the year 966, an ancient Benedictine monastery dedicated to St. Mary was established on the site in the town of Cernobbio. Over the centuries, this cloister grew into a large complex with dormitories, a refectory, kitchens, vineyards, and orchards stretching down to the lakeshore. By the late 18th century, the monastery was dissolved under imperial decree, and the property passed into private hands, marking the beginning of its transformation
The Pino & Cima Era: 19th Century Transition
In 1815, the estate entered a new chapter when Countess Vittoria Calderara and her husband, General Domenico Pino, acquired the property. A man of both discipline and refinement, General Pino transformed the villa, commissioning frescoed salons adorned with his family coat of arms — details that can still be admired today. Later, in the late 1800s, the estate was passed to the Cima family and eventually to the Brivio Erba family, who would give the villa its lasting name.

The “New” Villa Erba: Belle Époque Splendour
The most iconic version of the villa took shape in the early 1900s, when Luigi Erba commissioned a grand “new villa” designed by renowned Milanese architects. The neoclassical façade, sweeping staircases, and vast lake-facing windows captured the spirit of the Belle Époque. Inside, intricate frescoes, marble halls, and ornate ceilings reflected the elegance of the era. Over time, the Erba-Visconti family made the residence a hub of art and culture, home to one of Italy’s most celebrated filmmakers, Luchino Visconti, who was born there in 1906.
From Family Home to Event Landmark
After decades as a private residence, the heirs of the Visconti-Erba family sold the estate in the 1980s, transforming Villa Erba into an international landmark. A contemporary exhibition and event pavilion was later added within the historic park, harmoniously blending past and present. Today, Villa Erba stands as one of Lake Como’s most enchanting destinations — a place where timeless beauty, cinematic history, and Italian elegance come together to create unforgettable moments.
